In 2017, a group of visual artists met in Sylt, Germany for an international workshop with the theme “Violent Memories – depicting trauma and transformation in the visual Arts”. This was a part of the initiative of the Sylt Foundation and Indra Wussow, who already had organized many similar workshops and ventures under the subject “Identity & Transformation, Trauma & Reconciliation”.
It was after this workshop and in this context that we started a residency as a German and an Israeli artist in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and as guests of the Sa Sa Art Projects / Pisaot Residency.
We invited the artist’s community in Cambodia and artists and writers from Myanmar, Germany, Israel, Ireland, South Africa and Chile to participate in an artist’s fanzine project, with the only precondition that the contributions had to relate to one or more of the terms “trauma”, “reconciliation”, “identity” or “transformation”.
The aim was to create a small but unique platform, in the shape of an artistic publication that gathers different artist‘s views on the above notions and thereby creates (in metaphorical terms to start with) a sense of community and a visual or textual discourse.
We would like to thank all the artists and authors for their cooperation and trust.
